About Micronics Flow Measurement
Micronics ultrasonic flow meters are widely used in the Energy Management and retrofit Building Services markets in the UK and around the world to help reduce energy consumption and monitor water use. Our extensive range of products includes: Ultrasonic Clamp-On Flow Meters, Portable & Fixed Liquid Flow Meters, Energy Meters for heating and cooling applications and in-line MID approved ultrasonic energy and water meters for direct billing applications with a radio-based automatic reading system.
Since its inception Micronics have sold clamp-on water meters in more than 50 countries. Concentrating mainly on portable “Time of Flight” meters, some of which are marketed under the registered trade name of Portaflow™. Our clamp-on flow meters for many purposes continue to grow in popularity. clamp-on flow meters img
Flow sensors detect and then measure flow rates from the outside of the pipework, without any interruption to flow or process. In addition, for Process or Water industry applications, we can provide Clamp-On, full pipe or “Doppler” open channel flow meters for contaminated or dirty liquid flows.
In addition to product supply, Micronics offer a wide range of flow measurement solutions. Combining the Micronics product range with Flow Analysis software and expert staff to conduct flow surveys. Starting with the introduction of the first portable instrument, the company now markets a range of different products including “Time of Flight” and “Doppler” technology.
The range includes portable instruments and fixed meters based on the use of non invasive ultrasonic sound transmission. This detects liquid flow velocity within closed pipes or open channels. There are Energy options for clamp-on fixed meters, tank and level meters are also available.
Applications of an Ultrasonic Flow Meter
Ultrasonic Flow Meter applications include measuring liquid flow in full pipes as well as the measurement of liquids such as water, wastewater, acids and solvents, chemicals, hydrocarbons and oils. These can also be used to monitor and control heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. They are perfect for applications where flow disruption is simply not an option.
Types of Ultrasonic Flow Meter
The two types of Flow Meter, Transit Time (Time of Flight) and Doppler and they are both available in a clamp-on meter style with transducers. These are used to detect and then measure flow rates from the outside of the pipework, without any interruption to flow or process. Ultrasonic clamp on flow meters readings are altered by acoustic properties of fluids and impacted by density, viscosity, temperature and suspended particulates. These are all dependent on the type of flow meter.
Micronics Flow Measurement Product
The Micronics product range is also available on a competitive hire basis to provide emergency cover for failed meters. They provide customers with the tools to undertake their own short term flow survey work.

Micronics PF LV550 Portable Area/Velocity meter
Area-Velocity Flow Measurement in Open Channels and Pipes
PF LV550 measures Level and Velocity in open channels or pipes. No calibration is required. The sensor is a completely sealed ultrasonic unit with no ori ces or ports. It mounts inside the pipe or at the bottom of a channel. The watertight electronics enclosure is hung in the manhole or at a convenient location. Sensor mounting bracket, batteries, software and cables are included with each PF LV550.

This compact new meter operates on standard alkaline batteries for extended time periods to log level, velocity and water temperature in open channels, partially full sewer pipes and surcharged pipes without a flume or weir. It is designed for municipal storm water, combined effluent, raw sewage, irrigation water and stream flow.
PF LV550 uses a submerged ultrasonic sensor to continuously measure both Velocity and Level in the channel. The sensor has no moving parts and is resistant to fouling and corrosion.

Features
- Easy to Operate
- No
- calibration is required.Just install the sensor at the bottom of the pipe or channel and the PF LV550 logs level and velocity readings. Use the Logger software (included) to set the logging interval, and to view readings in real-time on your laptop or PC. PF LV550’s built-in LCD display lets operators check level and velocity rates, remaining battery life and logger memory.
- Efficient, Battery Powered
- With 4 standard Alkaline D-cells the PF LV550 will operate and data logger for extended time periods. (For example: logging at 5 minute intervals the PF LV550 batteries will last for 12 months and store over 105,000 separate level, velocity and temperature readings!)
How it Works
- The sensor transmits ultrasonic pulses that travel through the water and reflect on the liquid surface. To monitor water level, the PF LV550 precisely measures the time it takes for echoes to return to the sensor. Velocity is measured with an ultrasonic signal continuously injected into the now.
- This high frequency sound is reflected back to the sensor from particles or bubbles suspended in the liquid. If the fluid is in motion, the echoes return at an altered frequency proportionate to flow velocity.
- The PF LV550 uses this Doppler frequency shift to accurately calculate flow velocity

How does it work?
- The Portaflow 333/222 is a transit time ultrasonic flow meter designed to work with clamp-on transducers, to provide accurate measurement of liquid flowing within a closed pipe, without the need for any mechanical parts to be inserted through the pipe wall or to protrude into the flow system. It takes just a few minutes to install and there is no need to shut down flow or drain the system!
- When ultrasound is transmitted between the transducers, its velocity is slightly increased when travelling in the direction of flow, and slightly reduced when travelling against the flow. The resulting transit time difference is directly proportional to the velocity of the flow in the pipe.
- Having measured the flow velocity and knowing the pipe cross-sectional area, the volumetric flow can be easily calculated. Hydronic thermal energy, heat or cooling load is calculated from a combination of the flow rate and the flow and return temperature difference or delta T to comply with EN1434 section 6.
