VEGA sensors use different measuring principles when measuring the level or point level of liquids, solids, powders and gases.
VEGA Level Sensor and Measurement for Liquid and Solid
In continuous level measurement, the level of a medium in a tank or silo is detected with the help of different measuring methods and converted into an electronic signal. The level signal is either displayed directly on site or incorporated into a process control or management system.
Typical applications for continuous level measurement are process tanks, storage tanks or silos in the process industry. The measured media are liquids, pastes, powders, bulk solids
VEGAPULS Radar Level Measurement
- In continuous non-contact level measurement with radar, the sensor sends microwave signals towards the medium from above. The surface of the medium reflects the signals back in the direction of the sensor. Using the received microwave signals, the sensor determines the distance to the product surface and calculates the level from it.
- Liquids and solids are commonly measured with this measuring technique.

VEGAFLEX: Measurement of level and interface with guided wave radar (GWR)
- In level measurement with guided wave radar, microwave pulses are conducted along a cable or rod probe and reflected by the product surface.
- The measuring probe of the TDR sensor ensures that the signal reaches the medium undisturbed. Liquids, bulk solids and separation layers (interfaces) in liquids are commonly measured with this measuring technique.

- VEGAPASS 81
VEGASON: Ultrasonic level measurement
- In non-contact ultrasonic level measurement, the sensor emits ultrasonic pulses in the direction of the medium, which then reflects them back. The elapsed time from emission to reception of the signals is proportional to the level in the tank.
- Ultrasonic sensors are ideal for simple standard applications, both for liquids and for solids.

VEGACAL: Capacitive level measurement
In capacitive level measurement, the sensor and the vessel form the two electrodes of a capacitor. Any change in level causes a capacitance change, which is in turn converted into a level signal.

VEGAMAG: Magnetic level indicator
- VEGABAR, VEGAWELL, VEGADIF: Hydrostatic level measurement
- In hydrostatic level measurement, the measuring cell of the pressure transmitter detects even the slightest changes in hydrostatic pressure, which increases or decreases depending on the filling level. The acting pressure is converted into an electrical signal by the integrated electronics and then outputted as an output signal. Different types of measuring cells are used in level measurement based on the hydrostatic principle.
- PROTRAC: Radiation-based level measurement
- In radiometric, i.e. radiation-based, level measurement, a slightly radioactive isotope emits focused gamma rays.
- The sensor, which is mounted on the opposite side of the vessel, receives this radiation. Since gamma rays are attenuated when penetrating matter, the sensor can calculate level, point level, density or mass flow from the intensity of the incoming radiation.
Vega Pressure Measurement
Pressure measuring techniques can be used to measure not only process or differential pressure, but also level, volume, density or mass flow in all areas of process technology. The measuring ranges of pressure transmitters start at a few mbar and extend to extreme pressures up to 1,000 bar. Different measuring cells are used in these pressure instruments. VEGA pressure transmitters deliver high-precision readings in gases, vapors, liquids, Density Measurement
VEGA pressure measurement instruments provide accurate data for measuring level, volume, density and flow measurement of gas, vapour and liquids. VEGA pressure transmitters ensure reliable and advanced accuracy readings for the process and hazardous area industries utilising their CERTEC ceramic-capacitive measuring cells and METEC measuring cells.
Density measurement
The proportion of solid matter in a liquid is determined with the help of density measurement. Typical applications in the process industry are the measurement of acid and lye concentrations, the mixture density of abrasive or sticky liquids and the solid matter content of sludge and slurries. VEGA uses two different physical measuring principles for density measurement such as Differential pressure and Radiometric
In density measurement of liquids with differential pressure, two pressure measuring points are mounted at a fixed distance from each other. There are thus two different pressures acting on the system. The differential pressure transducer calculates the density of the medium from the resulting pressure difference. Thanks to the fine graduation of the measuring cell ranges, the differential pressure system can be optimally adapted to the respective application.
The advantages
- Real-time measurement of density in the ongoing process without sampling
- Differential pressure transducers can detect differential pressures of only a few mbar
- With an installed chemical seal, media with extreme temperatures can also be safely and reliably measured
Flow Rate Measurement
Flow rate measuring instruments measure the amount of substance that flows through a pipe cross-section per time unit. The measured quantity is outputted as mass or volume. Typical flow rate applications measure gases, vapours and aggressive or viscous liquids in pipelines as well as bulk solids on conveyor belts.
VEGA uses two different physical measuring principles for flow rate measurement:
- Differential pressure
- Radiometric
Level Switch
In point level detection, a point level switch detects when a certain predefined level is reached. Such a device is employed when it is not necessary to measure every possible intermediate level, as is the case with continuous level measurement. A switching command starts or stops filling equipment such as conveyors or pumps.
Point level switches outputting a binary signal can be integrated into a process control system. Point level detection systems can be used in liquids, pastes, powders or coarse bulk solids.
Typical applications for level switches are:
- minimum or maximum detection
- leak detection
- overfill protection
- in process tanks, storage tanks, silos and pipelines.
VEGASWING, VEGAVIB, VEGAWAVE: Vibrating level switches
In point level measurement with vibrating level switches, a rod or a fork is set vibrating. When the vibrating probe comes into contact with the medium, the vibration changes and the vibrating level switch outputs a switching command. Vibrating level switches are used as overfill protection devices or low-level indicators in liquids as well as in granular and powdery bulk solids.
VEGACAP, VEGAPOINT: Point level detection with capacitive level switches
In capacitive point level detection, the sensor and vessel form the two electrodes of a capacitor. Any capacitance change caused by a level change is converted into a switching signal. Thanks to the shortenable cable and rod versions, level switches can be perfectly adapted to any application. They are often used for overfill or dry run protection as well as oil/water or foam detection.
VEGAKON, EL: Point level detection with conductive point level switches
When the electrodes of the conductive point level sensor come into contact with a conductive fluid, a small alternating current begins to flow. The electronics then triggers a switching command. Conductive point level sensors are used in all areas of industrial instrumentation, e.g. as overflow protection, pump control or dry run protection.
VEGAMIP: Point level detection with microwave barrier
The microwave barrier functions like a light barrier: when the medium gets in the way of the microwave beam between the transmitter and the receiver, the signal is attenuated. This change is detected by the receiver and converted into a switching signal.
The microwave barrier is ideal for point level detection of liquids and solids. Another area of application is backup detection on conveyor belts.
PROTRAC: Radiometric point level detection
Radiometric point level detection operates with a radioactive source that emits focussed gamma radiation. The radiation is picked up by a detector on the opposite side of the vessel. When the gamma rays are blocked by the medium, the detector receives little or no radiation. The intensity changes of the incoming radiation are forwarded as signals by a relay.
Indicating and Controller
Industrial processes are highly automated nowadays. To ensure smooth operation, measuring instruments are employed to deliver a steady flow of up-to-date, objective information about the process to the control technology. Various hardware components as well as signal conditioning software process and integrate the measurement data.
They convert the analogue or digital signals from the measuring instruments into information, i.e. measured values, that are displayed on indicating instruments or fed directly into the control system.
