Coltraco Ultrasonics Instrumentsexports 89% of its output to 120 countries. In 2019 our company won The Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade. Members of our company include winners of Lifetime Export Achievement and Young Exporter of the Year Awards for commercial service, whilst others have won Science, Innovation & Research prizes and grant awards. Our company is committed to Maritime & Land Safety, and has won numerous industry Awards in this. Our Chairman is a member of various Government & Industry Committees and Expert Advisory Groups in public service.

We are founder  of Women in Maritime and the Armed Forces Covenant and speak regularly at public and private fora. We now manufacture a range of instrumentation and constant monitoring systems.

We also pioneered the Safesite™ concept by which pressurised CO2 & Clean Agent gaseous extinguishing systems are monitored for contents alongside the monitoring of the compartment they design to discharge into, since without the “gas being held” in a space protected by an extinguishing system, it will disperse without containing the fire event.

Using Coltraco Ultrasonics Instruments technology to check the contents of your fire suppression cylinders is non-invasive, non-destructive and non-disruptive meaning it is safer for personal and does not require the user to shut down the fire suppression system during inspection. The use of ultrasonic technology is a regulatory approved alternative method for monitoring the contents of cylinders. Our range of ultrasonic liquid level indicators are accurate to ±1.5 mm.

The non-disruptive, non-invasive nature of ultrasound contents monitoring allows testing to take place when the fire suppression cylinders are in-situ and operational. This process takes around 30-seconds per cylinder using our easy-to-use, intuitive technology. Compare this to traditional, manual weighing which requires lifting equipment, multiple people and around 15-minutes for inspection.

Enabling inspection to take place without disruption your cylinder installation means no shut-down, saving time and no requirement for multiple operators, saving labour costs. We have a large range of level monitoring technology allowing us to be competitive with pricing and Coltraco Ultrasonics have a “Price Promise” to be the most competitive on the market.

Portascanner Watertight
Portascanner Watertight

Unlike alternatives such as hatch cover hose testing, ultrasonic leak testing is quick and non-invasive, allowing you to check for leaks in a matter of minutes with practically no impact on the normal operation of your facilities.

Ultrasound enables a reliable and scientific way to assess watertightness. By contrast, chalk testing is easily falsified. The Portascanner® WATERTIGHT TOUCH is the world’s first ultrasonic leak detector that is also capable of quantifying the physical extent of individual leak sites and determining the flow rate of water through them. Our leak-size quantification algorithms have been independently tested and verified by the National Physical Laboratory, meaning you can understand and quantify the risk posed by each leak or seal.

The Portascanner® WATERTIGHT TOUCH contains in-built imaging and reporting functionality to make the surveying process as smooth as possible. Technical support, training, and advice is available throughout the lifetime of the unit and we are here to help you with your application.

We have different sensor options to meet your inspection requirements:

  • Our standard 2.5 MHz Dual-Element Sensor (Model No. DE2.5-14) is our most robust and widely used sensor option for metal thickness measurements. It has a 14mm diameter sensor face and has a measuring range of 1.5mm – 100.0mm.
  • Our 5.0 MHz Dual-Element Sensor (Model No. DE5.0-10) is our second most popular sensor option, commonly used for measuring wall thicknesses of small pipes. It has a 10mm diameter sensor face and capable of measuring reliably on pipes no smaller than 25.0mm (1”) in diameter. It has a measuring range of 1.5mm – 100.0mm.
  • Our 5.0 MHz Dual-Element Sensor (Model No. DE5.0-6) is mostly used for measuring wall thicknesses on your smallest pipes. It has a 6mm diameter sensor face and capable of measuring reliably on pipes no smaller than 15.0mm (1/2”) in diameter. It has a measuring range of 1.5mm – 50.0mm.
  • Our 2.25 MHz Dual-Element Sensor (Model No. DE2.25-12) is our recommended option for measuring highly attenuative materials such as engineering plastics, if the sensor options above do not meet your required application.Hide

Permaflow Fixed, Clamp-on, Transit Time Ultrasonic Flow Meter

Coltraco  Permaflow® is a fixed, clamp-on, ultrasonic transit time flow and heat meter that is non-invasive for measuring the flow rates of liquids containing less than 10% of gas/solid contents. It is mains powered, designed for 24/7 monitoring and is accurate to +/- 0.5% of measured value under ideal conditions.

Permaflow Ultrasonic clamp on flow meter

The Permaflow® fixed ultrasonic transit time flow meter has been tested and calibrated at an ISO 17025 laboratory, capable of meeting accuracies of +/- 0.5% of the true flow rate. We strive to offer the highest quality instruments, built with exceptional quality materials in the UK and remain competitively priced in the market worldwide through our unique R&D position.

The different types of flow measured by the Permaflow are:

  • Volumetric Flow Rate: such as litres per hour (l/h) or gallons per minute (gpm) etc.
  • Mass Flow Rate: such as kilograms per hour (kg/h) etc.
  • Heat or Energy Flow Rate: such as kilowatt hour (kWh) or British Thermal Unit (BTU)

All measured values can be individually totalised giving you the total flow rate that has been measured during a particular measurement session. The system accepts PT100 thermometer inputs, allowing temperature of your liquid to be monitored simultaneously.

Two PT100 thermometers can be installed in order to monitor supply and return temperatures, commonly used in heating and chilling efficiency calculations. The system displays the measurements in various measurement units (metric and imperial options available), such as litres per hour (l/h) and gallons per minute (gpm) for flow rate, kilowatt hour (kWh) and British Thermal Unit (BTU) for energy and heat quantity.

The system is built with modular I/O modules, with a range of different options available, allowing you to choose only what you need to save you cost and money. It comes with USB and RS232 as standard for serial communications and 16MB internal memory that is capable of logging over 90,000 measurements.

It is capable of saving measurements internally, to be exported later to a PC, or data stream directly from the system to the PC. To help to achieve reliable measurements, the system comes with built-in oscilloscope for signal diagnostics that assists you in performing a reliable measurement as part of the setting up process. Main benefits of choosing non-invasive ultrasonic transit time technology over inline flow measurement technology:

  • Clamp-on therefore no installation costs such as drilling into pipes and no downtime to the pipe network is present
  • 24/7 flow rate monitoring and customisable alert options are available
  • As there is no contact with the fluid being measured, there is no risk of pressure loss throughout your pipe network
  • As with above, the fluid cannot damage the flowmeter, which could contribute to a longer lifespan and lower maintenance cost compared to inline flowmeters which are in contact with the fluid and risk being damaged by the pressurised flowing fluid
  • The Permaflow® can be wall-mounted / fixed to achieve a stable and neat installation, allowing the display and measurements to be viewed clearly in a variety of room conditions
