The History of Berthold Technologies

When Prof. Dr. Rudolf Berthold set up his laboratory in a former hotel in Bad Wildbad in 1949, nobody could guess what an exciting journey we were about to embark on. Today, more than 75 years later, we are grateful for the trust that our customers have put in us and proud to work with them to improve life in meaningful ways.

Contactless level measurement for industrial applications – invented by Berthold In the process industry, precise systems for level and level switch measurement are fundamental and make an important contribution to the safety and high quality of production and logistics processes. Applications are most frequently carried out on liquids and solids in process tanks, storage tanks or silos. However, there are requirements in which level measurements are not feasible or attainable with conventional measurement technology due to the extreme boundary conditions or only possible with very high installation or maintenance costs. This is applicable, for example, in environments with high pressure or high temperatures or with aggressive or abrasive media.

Optimize your process with the density measurement from Berthold. Our density measurement systems are noncontact and maintenance-free. They provide accurate density and concentration readings of liquids such as acids, alkalis, slurries, solutions, and suspensions. Clamping on the outside of existing pipelines, the density measurement system can be used on pipes with diameters from 25 mm to over 1000mm, chutes, and vessels. Berthold’s density measurement is radiometric and therefore ideally suited for use in extreme measurement environments, such as with abrasive, highly viscous, or highly corrosive media, or even in the case of vibrations. It is completely unaffected by the flow velocity of the medium.

The major advantage of our systems is that the measurement performance remains stable even after years of operation with a repeatability of ±1 %, meaning there is no need to recalibrate with time. Due to the non-contacting nature of the measurement and the lack of moving parts, encrustations, dirt, wind and changing belt tension do not affect the bulk flow measurement.  Combined with the conveyor velocity signal, the mass flow rate is accurately determined without any negative influence from dust, temperature, vibrations, varying particle sizes or chemical properties of the measured material.

A radioactive source that emits ionizing radiation is a component of radiometric measuring systems. The radioactive material is completely sealed in an extremely resistant capsule. This guarantees safe and long-term use even under extreme environmental conditions. Our shields, made of steel or stainless steel and filled with lead or tungsten, offer the best shielding effect in every situation. The shielding or shutter remains closed during transport and maintenance work on the container until the measurement is put into operation.
