Overview
Arenal Process Control Solutions works with clients to increase the profitability of their plant by offering accurate, highly correlated real-time measuring data. We continuously work with process engineers to tune new monitoring and control solutions, monitoring networks and chemometry models into the clients process. Having the same objectives in mind, Arenal has an ungoing development program to increase measurement accurracy and control properties even further.
The reason for this is that we can expect higher requirements for existing measurement technologies. An example is a recent development in the semicon industry, requiring more stability and sensitivity of our ultrasonic spectroscopy sensors for measuring H2O2 in SC1. In this example, the production of better smartphones is the key objective of our client.
Arenal is world’s first and only producer of innovative ceramic ultrasonic (non-nuclear) spectroscopy and thermal analysers for the determination of Slurry Density, Specific Gravity, Total Suspended Solids, flow, massflow and temperature of abrasive and high concentration slurries. The ceramic sensor constructions not only provides the best acoustical and thermal physical properties but also it provides the highest degree of hardness ensuring optimal abrasive resistance for the high demanding applications in this industry.
General Information
Arenal PCS Slurry Density is the world’s first and only producer of innovative ceramic ultrasonic (non-unclear) spectroscopy and thermal analyzers for the determination of Slurry Density, Specific Gravity, Total Suspended Solids, flow, mass flow, and temperature of abrasive and high concentration slurries.
The ceramic sensor constructions not only provide the best acoustical and thermal physical properties but also provide the highest degree of hardness ensuring optimal abrasive resistance for the high demanding applications in this industry.
Another example is a recent development in the mining industry, requiring replacement of nuclear Analyser for the determination of slurrry density. A safer, environmental friendly and more reliable instrument was needed. And besides, more measuring points were needed to optimize production. For this objective, Arenal developped the ceramic ultrasonic slurry density Analyser.
Arenal PCS Slurry Density Analysers for the mining, dredging, drilling industry, and building materials. The Analyser consists of the process control Analyser and the wafer with its sensors. The wafer is connected between two flanges in such a way that the ceramic sensors are flush-mounted in the mass stream.

Although the ceramic ultrasonic and thermal sensors of Arenal PCS can be applied in any liquid in the world, it is mainly designed for abrasive slurries and pastes, which can be found in Mineral and Metal processing plants, dredging, and tunneling.
Arenal is actively involved in industrial slurries, like in CMP, pigment and catalysts slurries and battery pastes, and potato starch slurries. The optimal slurry for measuring density, flow, and mass flow is a homogeneous turbulent slurry in a pipe or vessel, with a large concentration of particles below 1 mm.
The Scope of the process offered
Smart measurement technology
Until now, slurry density recording in the mining industry is often being performed with risky and expensive nuclear densitometers. With the introduction of the ultrasonic slurry density analyser of Arenal, the density recording can now be performed in a more secure, user-friendly and highly accurate manner, while saving costs and allowing for quicker interventions.
Measuring slurry flow is in most cases performed with magnetic flow meters from other brands. Except for iron ore and ferro solicate applications, this technology does not work well. Arenal re-invented the well-known thermal massflow meter. In combination with the slurry density analyzer, the flow and massflow can be determined now with the same accuracy as with magnetic flow meters, but for a much lower price and without the need for maintenance.
Ultrasonic Spectroscopy
Ultrasonic spectroscopy is used to monitor concentrations and density for all mining and industrial slurries and pastes. For each application Arenal offers suitable mounting solutions and calibration models.
Ceramic Thermal mass flow sensors are used to monitor abrasive slurries and pastes. However, due to density changes, the thermal conductivity of such slurries change. This is compensated when the technology is combined with the ultrasonic slurry density analyzer.
Ultrasonic spectroscopy is the science of the behaviour of propagation of ultrasonic waves, due to changes in the environment. In most cases ultrasonic (high frequency sound) pulses are shot into the medium and returned echo’s are evaluated in a computer.
This technology is widely spread in nature (bats and dolphins use this technology to detect movements or objects in their neighborhood), in fishing (to detect fish schools or determine the depth of the sea), in medical applications (while looking at unborn children in the mothers belly or for other medical applications) and in the industry in ultrasonic flow meters or for NDT applications.
- Process Analysers
- The SDA is the first and only ultrasonic Analyser with ceramic ultrasonic sensors in the world. One or more sensors in the field are connected to this Analyser and this Analyser calculates the density of the slurry, as well the temperature and the total suspended solids.

- Quality Transmitters
- QT010-UDT: Ultrasonic Density Transmitter.
Designed to control Arenal’s Ultrasonic Density Probe to measure concentrations of dissolved and suspended solids in liquids and slurries, as well as total density of most liquids in process industry, food and beverage, mining, semiconductor industry etc. - QT130-IOT: IO Transmitter
This transmitter range (QT131..133) is designed to increase connectivity with other systems.

- Ceramic probes
- Thermal Massflow Probe
- The all-ceramic thermal mass flow probe can be used in a wide range of industrial applications such as water, chemicals, oils and slurry mass flow measurement. To correct for thermal conductivity of the medium, the mass flow meter is embedded in the slurry density analyser or the chemical concentration analyser.
- Temperature probe
- Arenal offers a unique, all-ceramic temperature probe for a variety of industry applications including high accuracy temperature measurement in water, chemicals, oils and slurries.
- The temperature of abrasive slurries or aggressive chemicals is determined by a 4-wire PT1000 element inside a ceramic sensor. Arenal offers connectivity to various transmitters, such as 4-20 mA and Hart.
- Ultrasonic Density Probes
- QP010-UDP: Ultrasonic Density Probes
Designed to measure concentrations of dissolved and suspended solids in liquids and slurries, as well as total density of most liquids in process industry, food and beverage, mining, semiconductor industry etc. - The product line for ultrasonic probes, QP010-UDP, is most extensive. The reason is that mainly this part changes due to the environment and mounting situation in which it is placed, so only the embodiment changes. For many of the measurement technologies, Arenal designed six different versions: for submersible, inline, sanitary, extractive, (trans-) portable, laboratory and wafer cell mounting. Then sometimes there is an option for the material used, for the mounting assembly and for the dimension of the pipe.

- Mounting configurations
- Spool piece / saddle type
- To measure the density of abrasive slurries in pipes, Arenal offers complete spool pieces with PU lining. The SPC sensor is flush mounted from the inside to outside of the pipe and fixed in a saddle type flange.
- Steel wafer cell
- The Steel Wafer Cell is designed for high pressure (up to 600 bar) and paste applications. Mounting isbetween the two flanges of the pipe. It is our latest technology with sensor-less configuration: there is no sensor in contact with the medium. The stainless steel cell has a wolfram carbide coating on the inside. Optionally, this system can be used to measure the wear in pipes, when it is assumed that the erosion of the pipes is similar to the erosion of the wafer cell. In any case, it does not influence the measurement of density.
- Standard wafer cell
- The standard wafer cell is made from UPE-1000 (high molecular weight polyurethane). It is clamped between two flanges of the pipe. This cell is designed for low pressures (up to 7 bar) and low temperatures (up to 55 °C). Wafer Cells are designed for each pipe individually, as the size of the flanges and the inner diameter of the wafer cell must correspond. A well designed wafer does not wear out.

Mass flow monitoring
Ceramic Thermal massflow sensors are used to monitor abrasive slurries and pastes. However, due to density changes, the thermal conductivity of such slurries change. This is compensated when the technology is combined with the ultrasonic slurry density analyser.
