Hengstler Sin/Cos Rotary Encoders and Resolvers

Overview

Hengstler is a leading European manufacturer of industrial components for counting and control applications, such as counters / timers, rotary encoders, industrial and temperature controllers, relays, and printers and cutters.

Today’s automation leaders are seeking solutions that will enable machines with advanced analytics, condition monitoring and predictive maintenance, while also offering improved efficiency, and fast time to market. None of these alone are easy challenges. However, your competitors are launching new solutions at an increasing rate meant to meet these challenges.

Hengstler has created SCS Open Link, an open communication platform that provides high performance data transmission over a cost effective single cable solution, designed to quickly and efficiently connect rotary encoder and other sensors to edge computing and Industry 4.0 solutions.

More than just a protocol, SCS Open Link provides a long term platform for your Industry 4.0 roadmap, reduce time to market, create new revenue streams and help our customers build solutions for the factory of tomorrow.

Hengstler offers a wide range of incremental and absolute encoders that provide reliable performance in challenging environments such as construction machinery, CNC machining, oil and gas, agriculture, mining and more.

Accurate sinewave rotary encoders by HENGSTLER are a preferred choice in drives with high dynamics thanks to their low harmonic distortion. They have excellent immunity to interference and high functional dependability due to control and system monitoring. The broad working temperature range means the motor can be used to capacity more effectively.

Brushless resolvers are the ideal rotor position indicators for the position feedback of brushless motors, robots or direct drives. They are robust, reliable and suitable for high operating temperatures until 155 °C and resistant to most process liquids, contaminations, radiation and EMC-Interferences as well as highly shock-proof and vibration-resistant.

What is a rotary encoder

A rotary encoder, often referred to as simply a shaft encoder, is an electro-mechanical device that converts angular positioning into output signals. Rotary encoders can be broadly segmented by their feedback type as incremental or absolute.

How do rotary encoders work

Rotary encoders translate the mechanical rotational motion of an object such as a motor shaft into an electronic signal. Optical rotary encoders measure rotation by shining a LED light through a disc with markings onto an optical sensor to detect motion. Magnetic rotary encoders use a similar principle but measure motion as a magnetized wheel turns and is detected by a magnetic sensor.

What is the output of a rotary encoder

Incremental rotary encoders output a stream of ubiquitous pulses over 360 degrees of rotation, hence the term pulses per revolution of PPR. Incremental rotary encoders can have one channel output (A), two channel output (AB, known as quadrature) as well as an optional index channel (Z).Absolute rotary encoders output a unique digital word or bit for each position over 360 degrees of rotation. This digital word must be communicated in the same language as the controlling system with options including parallel, serial, field bus and ethernet based communication protocols.

When should you use a rotary encoder

Rotary encoders should be used in any application that requires precision motion control. While a power can be supplied to a motor to make it turn, to control exactly how fast it actually turns  requires real time feedback so that the controlling device can increase or decrease power to achieve a consistent motor speed or shaft position. Rotary encoders are therefore indispensable in precision motion control applications including servo motor feedback, robotics, factory automation and more.

Hengstler Sine-wave Encoder S 21

Hengstler S21 Sinus Rotary Encoder, developed specifically for motor feedback applications, is well known for its broad temperature range from -15°C to +120°C, which enables the motor to be used to capacity more effectively.

  • Wide operating temperature range of -15 °C up to +120 °C, therefore optimum use of motor capacity
  • High limiting frequency with excellent signal quality, allowing highest peak speeds and reduced non-productive time wastage
  • Excellent immunity to interference (EN 61000-4-4, Class 4)
  • High functional safety due to signal control and system monitoring (under-voltage, pollution, disc damage, end of LED service life)
  • High signal quality through control and error compensation

Brushless resolvers are the ideal rotor position indicators for the position feedback of brushless motors, robots or direct drives. They are robust, reliable and suitable for high operating temperatures until 155 °C and resistant to most process liquids, contaminations, radiation and EMC-Interferences as well as highly shock-proof and vibration-resistant.

Harowe brand resolvers are suited for high temperature (up to 220ºC) applications, and have outstanding mechanical shock and vibration specs. In addition,   shielded, spaced-support bearings provide up to 10x the life of duplex bearings. Tooth wound models cut electrical error 50 percent, and brushless models eliminate components that can limit life.

Unlike rotary encoders, which use a coded disk to determine position and have a digital output, resolvers are magnetic drives that use two sets of rotating windings and a fixed core winding to generate an analog (sine and cosine) feedback output. Considered more rugged than encoders, they are used in adverse operating conditions involving extreme temperature, high shock and vibration, and dirty environments.

Application/Industries:

  • Hengstler Resolvers BRX Series

The BRX-Series brushless resolvers are the ideal rotor position indicators for the position feedback of brushless motors, robots, or direct drives. They are robust, reliable, and suitable for high operating temperatures up to 155 °C and resistant to most process liquids, contaminations, radiation, and EMC-Interferences as well as highly shock-proof and vibration-resistant. Thanks to automated manufacturing the quality level is excellent.

Hengstler Resolvers BRCX Series

The Hengstler BRCX Series brushless resolvers are the ideal rotor position indicators for the position feedback of brushless motors, robots or direct drives. They are robust, reliable and suitable for high operating temperatures up to 155 °C and resistant to most process liquids, contaminations, radiation and EMC-Interferences as well as highly shock-proof and vibration-resistant. Many different special versions are available upon request.

Hengstler Resolvers R11 Series

Hengstler Resolver R11 Series distinguish themselves through high reliability in harsh environments, operating temperatures up to 155 °C and high shock resistance. Based on their brushless design they are the ideal supplement to brushless servo motors. The accuracy as well as the repeatability are excellent. These resolvers are equipped with precision bearings and are maintenance-free. They are also the shortest resolvers, that are available on the market.

Ideal mate for brushless servomotors. Brushless construction uses a rotary transformer to pass the reference signal to the rotor, eliminating components that can limit life and cause noise. Series 11 has excellent angular accuracy and repeatability. It is rated up to 125ºC for high temperature applications.

Hengstler Resolvers R25 Series

Hengstler R25 Series Resolver industry resolvers possess especially robust casings with protection class IP65. They are especially suitable for use with high temperatures (+125 °C in long-term operation), and offer extraordinary values of vibration and shock resistance (40g as well as 200g), as well as noise immunity.

Brushless resolvers are the better choice over encoders for applications that involve very high temperature, vibration and shock, and dirty environments. The R25 uses a front-and-rear bearing arrangement that gives two or three times the radial load bearing capacity and up to ten times the life of competing packages having duplex bearings. Rated for ruggedness: IP-65 protection, 125ºC continuous duty, shock to 200g, and vibration to 40g.
