Oil Skimmers, Inc. CoolSkim™ Oil Water Separator

Oil contamination issues often result in downtime, maintenance, bacteria growth, and costly replacement of coolants and wash water. In certain applications, proper removal of tramp oil can prove difficult due to limited access to the sump.

For applications like these, where limited space or access doesn’t allow for the installation of a Brill® tube-type oil skimmer, Oil Skimmers, Inc. has developed the CoolSkim®.

About CoolSkim™ Oil Water Separator

The CoolSkim uses a floating weir skimmer with a pump to bring a continual flow of liquid from the sump to the separator.

To aid in oil separation, the solution passes through a coalescing media pack, causing the oil to rise to the top and form two separate layers. The oil drains to a collection vessel after passing through an adjustable weir funnel. The coolant system is refilled with clean coolant.

The CoolSkim is an oil water separator and coolant coalescer that efficiently and effectively removes tramp oil from coolant systems and parts washers to:

  • Extend the life of coolants and wash water
  • Avoid frequent, costly coolant replacement and spent coolant disposal charges
  • Eliminate the source of bacteria growth to keep employees safe and prevent foul odors
  • Extend the life of machine tools by using cleaner coolant
  • Improve the finishing process and the performance of washed parts by using cleaner wash solutions
  • Decrease the need for chemicals or detergents in wash solutions

Every stage of coolant or wash water use, purification, and disposal benefits from the use of the CoolSkim to eliminate tramp oils. It has been shown to prolong the life of coolants, machine tools, and wash solutions and works well with reservoirs of all sizes.

An efficient and successful coolant and wash water management system, the CoolSkim Oil Water Separator eliminates bacterial growth in the sump and prolongs the life of coolants and wash water by removing tramp oil from the surface of coolant sumps and parts washers.

COLLECTION

The contaminated liquid is continuously pumped from the coolant or wash water sump into the Coolskim unit via an optional submersible electric or air-operated double diaphragm pump.

SEPARATION

To speed up separation, the solution passes through the coalescing media pack and into the CoolSkim. An adjustable surface funnel is used to catch and drain away the free oil that rises to the surface and forms a noticeable layer. The amount of surface oil that flows to the oil discharge port can be controlled by adjusting the height of the funnel. Water or coolant free of oil is reintroduced to the application after the oil gravity drains to a collection tank.

The components of the CoolSkim include a stainless steel tank with pre-assembled connections and valves, baffles, an adjustable internal weir, and a transparent, detachable cover. There are the following choices:

Floating 3-Ball Weir Intake

Brings the surface oil from sump into the CoolSkim.

Air or Electric Pumps

Electric/submersible or air-operated double diaphragm pumps are available.

Coalescing Media Pack

The coalescing media pack facilitates oil separation, making oil rise more quickly and easily. The coalescing media pack is removable for easy maintenance and cleaning.
