Smith Systems, has always looked to the end users for their feedback on every part of the design, allowing those who actually experience the frustration and headache of replacing or returning a faulty sensor to shed light on what happens in the field with these small but necessary products. Smith Systems® utilizes its experience to optimize sensor designs for every application, and because of this attention to detail, success has followed. Smith Systems® sensors are found on equipment that moves, has an engine, or equipment that creates power, all over the world. Being ISO 9001, ATEX, and IRIS certified, you can be confident that Smith Systems® products offer the highest reliability at the best price. Our parts are designed and manufactured at our state-of-the-art facility in beautiful Brevard, North Carolina, USA.
The Product of Smith Systems

Active Speed Sensors
Smith Digi-Tran ® Digital Speed Sensors utilize integral active signal conditioning electronics to provide constant amplitude output regardless of exciter speed. These speed sensors can be powered with a wide range of supply voltages and are compatible with digital equipment. These speed sensors can be used to detect ferrous metal and magnets in motion. Smith Systems, Inc. offers three types of active speed sensors, standard digital, zero speed, and proximity.
Smith Systems, Inc features 3 types of active speed sensors:
- Standard Digital Speed Sensor
- Zero Speed Sensors
- Proximity Speed Sensors
The standard digital sensors are passive sensors with integrated signal conditioning for operation in the 5 to 30 KHz range. Zero speed sensors utilize a special sensing element for operation in the 0 to 20 KHz range and for wide air gaps. Proximity sensors are used for detecting ferrous and non-ferrous metal. The typical operating frequency range for a proximity sensor is 0 to 2 KHz.
Smith Digi-Tran ® speed sensors are available in a variety of housing configurations and terminations. Housing configurations to accommodate applications with high pressure and fluid submersion are available. These sensors are designed to accommodate a broad spectrum of temperatures and are resistant to oil, dirt and moisture.
Application Designs
Smith Systems, Inc. is a company committed to meeting your unique requirements. We are here to assist with your integration of sensors into your end products and systems. Whether the use is in process controls, aircraft gas turbine engines, critical speed controls, braking systems of rail cars, or in remote unmanned pumping and power generating stations. Smith Systems, Inc. can provide cost effective sensor solutions to meet your special application needs with quality and reliability designed into them.
ATEX/IECEx Certified Electronics Manufacturer
ATEX refers to European Directive 2014/34/EU, which covers equipment and protective systems for use in areas endangered by potentially explosive atmospheres created by the presence of flammable gases, vapors, mists or dusts. Definition: IECEx refers to the International Standard, which covers equipment and protective systems for use in areas endangered by potentially explosive atmospheres created by the presence of flammable gases, vapors, mist or dust.
Smith Systems, Inc. has an ATEX/IECEx electronics certified family of magnetic speed sensors for use in Group II (other than mines), category 2, G (gases, vapors and mists) applications. Category 2 refers to “increased safety under abnormal operating conditions”. This family of speed sensors employs the protection concept of encapsulation. These sensors are certified to temperature class T3 (200°C) and T2 (300°C). Smith Systems, Inc. is an ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC 80079-34 certified company. Certificate numbers available upon request.
Automotive and Racing Speed Sensors
Smith Systems, Inc. Automotive and Racing:
Our products include:
- Hall Effect Speed Sensors
- Speed Sensors with multiple channels
- Variable Reluctance
- High Temperature Variable Reluctance Speed Sensors
Hall Effect Speed Sensor Technology carried over from aerospace sensors enables these products to survive the racing environment’s hostile conditions. Smith Systems, Inc. speed sensors are running in NHRA ®, Champ ®, Indy ® and F1 ® cars.
High reliability, durability and peak performance are designed in and built into every speed sensor. Every device is pre-qualified by cycling through a rigorous test program. We offer single and dual output, biased and un-biased, variable reluctance and Hall Effect technology speed sensors. Both the passive and active probes can be used for crank triggers, vehicle transmission speed sensors, turbocharger speed sensors, distributor pick-ups and general speed inputs to data acquisition/engine management systems. We also manufacture high reliability probes for MSD ® and Electromotive ® ignition systems. Automotive and Racing Temperature Speed Sensors
Our temperature sensors incorporate a variety of sensing methods including thermistors, RTD’s, thermo-fuses and thermostats. Typical applications include air, oil, water and bearing temperature monitoring.
Proximity Sensors
Smith Systems, Inc. Digi-Prox inductive magnetic proximity sensors are used in a variety of applications where movement of metal parts must be monitored. These proximity sensors are applied in counting, safety, control and other applications. Smith Systems, Inc. also offers models that are designed for use in turbine flow meters. These magnetic proximity sensor units provide no-drag flow measurement for high accuracy. Smith Systems, Inc. proximity sensors can be powered with a wide range of supply voltages and are compatible with digital equipment. Two and three wire models are available.
Digi-Prox speed sensors are available in a variety of housing configurations and terminations. These sensors are designed to accommodate a broad spectrum of temperatures and are resistant to oil, dirt and moisture.
Passive Speed Sensors
Smith Systems, Inc. passive speed sensors convert mechanical motion to an A/C voltage without the need of a power supply. These self-contained magnetic sensors produce a magnetic field which, when in the proximity of ferrous objects in motion, generate a voltage. The frequency of this voltage is directly proportional to the speed of the object in motion.
Magna-Tran ® speed sensors are available in a variety of housing configurations and terminations. Housing configurations to accommodate high pressure and fluid submersion applications are available. These passive sensors are designed to accommodate a broad spectrum of temperatures and are resistant to oil, dirt and moisture.
