The Coriolis Effect was discovered by the physicist Gustave Gaspard de Coriolis in the 1830s, and is described as “the inertial force exerted on an object as a result of movement relative to a rotating frame of reference.” This science has been applied to many technologies: hydraulics, machine performance, missiles, ergonomics, ocean, and atmospheric circulation and, of course, mass flow metering.

The use of the Coriolis Effect as a technique for liquid and gas mass flow measurement was firmly established over 25 years ago. Since then, a number of different designs of Coriolis Effect meters have been produced.  With the tremendous advances made in electronic signal processing technology in recent years, the application base for Coriolis mass flow meters has expanded dramatically and the term “Coriolis meter” is now intimately associated with high accuracy and reliable performance in a flow measurement instrument.

HOW CORIOLIS METERS WORK

There are quite a few different Coriolis flow meter designs available. Each has its own measurement tube arrangement but all work to essentially the same principle – the Coriolis Effect. Coriolis meters are primarily Mass Flow Meters and they can measure mass very accurately. When used for volumetric measurement, mass measurement is combined with a density value to provide a calculated volume flow rate

General Information

Each and every Rheonik Coriolis Flow Meter is designed to give many years of service in one of a wide variety of applications across many industries. Prior to delivery, the meter was carefully calibrated and the entire sensor subjected to an over pressure test at 1.5 times the maximum operating pressure limit. Manufacturing records are meticulously maintained for each sensor to assist in any future support request received.

Rheonik flow meters are made for a wide variety of applications and in compliance with many international standards. Maximum operating limits (temperature, pressure) for each RHM flow sensor are stated on the permanently attached serial number plate and must not be exceeded.

Where flow meters are operated at elevated temperatures, thermal insulation around the sensor should be provided to ensure that the entire flow meter is kept at or very near the operating temperature of the process.

  • Given the rapid reaction time, the appliances are suited to both batch dosing and flow control or monitoring.
  • The measurement is taken regardless of the pressure, temperature, viscosity, conductivity or flow characteristics of the liquid.
  • Due to its unique design, the measuring sensor is durable enough not to wear down even after many years of operation and is also a low-maintenance product.
  • Inside the liquid stream, there are no fittings or rotating parts that could block the flow and consequently lead to a very costly shutdown of the production facilities.
  • Installing the flow meter into the pipeline system is easy. No long tube runs in front of and behind the sensor need to be taken into account and the measuring sensor can be mounted almost directly behind turbulence creating elbows or pipe diameter reducers without impairing the accuracy of the measurements.
  • Measuring media with fibrous content a high solid charge does not pose any real difficulty. If used in accordance with the instructions, it is, unlike positive-displacement counters, possible to do without expensive filters without actually damaging the measuring sensor.
  • Measurements can be taken by the measuring sensor irrespective of the flow of the liquid. Sudden pressure peaks or water shocks in the pipeline will not damage the appliance. In such an instance, other purely mechanical measuring procedures are prone to impeller wheels over torquing, axles breaking, or bearings becoming displaced, which all result in the measuring device becoming unusable or even blocking the flow of liquid.
  • Rheonik appliances are calibrated at the manufacturer’s site on precision test benches and can be operated directly without the need for local adjustments. A calibration certificate is supplied with the appliance

The Flow Measurement System

The complete flowmeter system consists of a:

  • Sensor, type RHMxx
  • Transmitter, type RHExx
  • Connection cable

Inside the measuring sensor, there are precision tubes that are energized by an electromagnetic drive system, which itself is fed by the transmitter, to vibrate at their natural frequencies.

When a liquid or gas flows through the vibrating tubes, it is subjected to additional deflection due to the degree of inertia that is generated. This deflection is recorded electronically by two velocity sensors and a high-precision electronic time delta.

This measured quantity is proportional to the mass flow rate. A further conversion into physical units is done in a purely digital manner using a signal processor in the transmitter. At the same time, all of the appliance’s functions are constantly monitored. Should any disruptions occur, all of the errors that have occurred are immediately reported in the display.

The transmitter has a 4 to 20 mA analogue output with programmable span, which is proportional either to the measured mass flow rate or the temperature; it also has an impulse output that supplies mass-proportional impulses.

All of the outputs and measuring functions can be verified at any time by the user by using the diagnostic mode in the appliance. The maintenance or new calibration intervals can be monitored via a run-time counter.

For service or repair purposes, the transmitter and flow sensor can be replaced independently of each other. This significantly reduces the costs of spare parts for the installed flow sensor/transmitter.

During the factory calibration, the mass flow sensor can be calibrated independently of the transmitter. All sensor-specific calibration data can be programmed using magnetic switches located on the front panel.

To achieve this, the instrument does not need to be opened. All of the relevant data is buffered in a non-volatile semiconductor device (EEPROM).

Rheonik RHM Omega Tube Coriolis Flow Sensors

Introduction

Inside an RHM sensor, there are precision tubes energized by an electromagnetic drive system controlled by the attached RHExx transmitter. These tubes vibrate at their natural frequency.

When a fluid (liquid or gas) flows through these vibrating tubes, they are subjected to non symmetrical deflection, the degree of which is determined by the mass of the fluid passing through. This deflection is detected electronically by two sensors within the flow meter body. High-precision electronics in the transmitter process the sensor signals and calculate a time delta between them. This time delta is proportional to the mass flow rate.

RHMxxx sensors are intrinsically safe and can be certified for use in hazardous areas when connected to a suitably certified transmitter.

The Rheonik Omega Tube meter mechanism consists of three distinct sections:

The Measurement Section

  • Pickup Coils – provide signals to the transmitter
  • Measurement Tubes – the part of the meter where the measurement takes place

The Meter Drive System

  • Mass Bars – provide stability and support to the measurement tube oscillation
  • Drive Coils – provide power to maintain oscillations at a constant amplitude
  • Torsion Rods – help energize and guide oscillation

The Meter Connection System

  • In/Out Section – decouples measurement tubes from process line stress and misalignment

Each section plays a specific role in ensuring that the meter performs at a high level when measuring flow. Flow Range and Direction

If, once the flow meter has been mounted, the flow reading is opposite or negative to the flow reading expected, the flow sense can be corrected by parameter adjustment in the transmitter.

Upstream/Downstream Straight Run Requirements

For sensor models RHM 30 to 160 manufactured with a parallel tube, seal-less construction type,
straight pipe sections of 5-10 pipe diameters upstream and 3-4 pipe diameters downstream should be provided where flow is connected to the meter out of plane with the sensor meter tubes.

This is required to avoid different flow velocities being established within the two measuring tubes. No valves or reducers should be installed between the pipe mounting supports and the sensor.

Horizontal Pipe Mounting

The location and orientation of a sensor in line is application dependent although whenever
possible, installation of an RHM sensor is preferred in a horizontal pipeline.

  • Liquid applications: For liquid measurements, the RHM sensor should be installed at a low point in the pipe system with its measurement tubes pointing downwards as this will prevent gas bubbles collecting in the sensor. The presence of gas bubbles can reduce the performance of the sensor for both mass flow and density.
  • Liquid applications with solid particles in the fluid: If there is a risk that the liquid contains (heavy) solid particles, the RHM sensor should be installed at a high point in the pipe system with its measuring loops pointing upwards to avoid the collection of the particles in the sensor.
  • Gas applications: For gas measurements, the RHM sensor should be installed at a high point in the pipe system with its measuring loops pointing upwards to avoid condensation or other liquids collecting in the sensor.

It is recommended to install RHM flow sensors with rigid supports at both the inlet and outlet. The supports should be placed apart at a distance of no more than three times the width of the sensor housing.

Robust supports are needed for large, heavy sensors in order to protect the mechanical integrity of the pipe. Avoid heavy shocks to the RHM flow meter at any time

Vertical Pipe Installation

Installation of an RHM sensor in a vertical pipe (“flag” installation) is only recommended for pure liquids without gas and solid particles and for dry, non-condensing gases. Due to the internal arrangement of the tubes within the meter, there is the possibility that for low flow liquid installations, gas bubbles and/or solids may accumulate in the meter. For low flow gas installations there is a possibility that some liquids may accumulate in the meter.

  • For liquid applications with possible gas content, flow should be upwards through the meter to
    assist in purging and removing accumulated gas from the meter.
  • Liquid applications with possible content of solid particles should be avoided.
  • For gas installations the flow should always be downwards through the meter.

When putting the meter into service, it is important to ensure that it is completely filled. To achieve this, a relatively high flow should be introduced to the meter to purge unwanted liquid or gas
